Apparently I undergo my lifters in backwards as well. "ENGINES" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 19:27:19

Ford offered Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet versions of the 429. The Cobra Jet rated at 370 hp was equipped with a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor larger camshaft. 11.3 to 1 compression ratio and a special set of cylinder heads. The Super Cobra Jet rated at 375 hp had a 4-bolt main block a Holley carburetor and a larger mechanical camshaft. In 1971 the CJ engine also used a 4-bolt main block. However these engines were actually underrated and produce cater in the 440-460 hp range. This was done to deceive insurance companies (common practice in that era) so that buyers did not undergo to pay higher insurance rates. The 351 Cleveland was introduced in 1969 as Ford's new performance car engine and was built through the end of the 1974 model year. It incorporated elements learned on the 385 big-block series and the Boss 302 particularly the poly-angle combustion chambers with canted valves and the thin-wall casting technology. Both a 4V (4-barrel carburetor) performance version and a 2V (2-barrel carburetor) basic version were built both with 2 valves per cylinder. The latter had a different cylinder head with smaller valves smaller ports and open combustion chambers to conform to its intended applications. Only the Q-code 351 "Cobra Jet" (1971-1974). R-code "Boss" 351 (1971) and R-code 351 "HO" (1972) versions have 4-bolt mains although all 335 series engines (351C/351M/400) have space for them even in 2-bolt main form. The main difference between 351W/351C/351M/400 engines is connecting rod length and main bearing size. The 351M/400 engines have the largest bearing size and the tallest deck height while sharing the 429/460 bell housing pattern. The 351C engine has a medium main bearing size and shorter connecting rods than the 351W and the 351M/400 while retaining the SBF engine mount locations and bell housing pattern. The 400 engine has the longest stroke of any SBF or 335 series engine. All of the 351C and 351M/400 engines differ from the 302/351W by having an integrated timing cover casting in the front of the block to which the radiator hose connects. H-code1973 H-code 2V 351 ClevelandThe majority of 351 Cleveland engines are H-code 2V (2-venturi carburetor) versions with low compression. These were produced from 1970 through 1974 and were used on a variety of Ford models from compact to intermediate. M-codeThe M-code version was produced from 1970 through 1971. Both years offered quench heads but 1970 offered a slightly higher (advertised) 11.4:1 compression ratio.

You may start a new thread on the topic if the information in this thread is not sufficient. I undergo the Beast on ebay. Greaty deal for someone. 1990 Ford Bronco with 351. I have owned the truck for a year and a half put about 1,500 miles on it. It Runs great drives great. 4X4 works great! This is the best SUV I undergo owned for comfort and go anywhere do anything. We had the approve seat out for hauling towed our motorcycle to bike week with it it does it all!! 158,000 miles. The transport has, journey Control,A/C (converted to R-134 from Freon)Power steeringpower brakesTilt WheelPower WindowsRemovable Top The transmission had a rebuild at 80,000 miles and the engine was rebuilt at 110,000. I added Mustang Cobra Roller rockers (purchased here) and an MSD coil (purchased here) last year. If you don't experience what those are they added about 20 HP over stock. The below parts undergo less than 1,000 miles on them. Starter. Ignition Relay. Battery. Swaybar Bushings rear. Alternator. Tie Rods (all). Power Steering Gearbox. Upper and Lower roll joints. straighten Window Motor. Outer defy stripping on Driver - passenger - and follow. Tires undergo about 3,000 miles on them. The be is in good condition a few problem spots the tailgate has the usual rust in the usual spots. I have not fixed the following yet. Temperate gauge reads to H almost all the time sending unit or calculate problem the gas calculate is stuck on e - I use the trip measure and go 250 miles before alter up - the drivers door does no fasten the drivers vent window needs the locking clip. I undergo a calculate cluster I ordain put in with the broach in case that is the problem with the gauges. Wife's bought an H3 on here so we don't be another 4X4 and I bought a choose up on here undergo a pick-up transport for hauling - a truckload of dirt and rocks would tear up the interior of the bronco. Those are the 2 reasons we got the Bronco. If you add up the new parts they are about 2,000 alone. Great deal for someone who wants a reliable transport for hunting or college student. "S-197 with a boss 351, say it's so!!!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 22:12:29

I just read a Detroit news reprint over at the ford truck site. It talked about future ford engines and transmisions. Such things as the new ford inhouse diesels hydrogen furnish cells but the thing that caught my eye was about the boss V-8's. It said the 7 liter V-8 would replace the V-10 in the super duty and the boss 6.2 for the F-150. But the new to me it mentioned a boss 5.8 for the mustang coupe. It maybe a special edition stang but ford was leaning toward making it an optional engine from the 5.0 GT base engine. Thats the first I've heard of a 351 boss for our cars and I got excited and needed to overlap. These changes are slated for around 2010 copy year. The truck V-8's would have cylinder deactivation for better mpg but didn't spiecify for the stang. Having a 5.8 as an option to the 5.0 would be pretty alter. I'm a PC idiot or I would copy the bind and paste it or whatever it's called. I do good just to get on the forum. Anyway thats something exciting to think about. From SVTPerformance comLatest Boss InfoMajor turmoil over at the cover dwell is causing major changes as I'm sure you can imagine. As of now the 5.8L Boss engines are slated for Mustangs but not until '11. 6.2s are now relegated to truck only duty. The new push for the impress and most at Ford don't even experience about it is approve to a 5.4 4v using GT/GT500 heads and a new intake. Obviously this would be the most cost effective despatch for a SE that's supposed to come to market in the near future. Evidently they've made 380hp (at the flywheel) with off the shelf cams and this motor. Program accessment for the N/A 5.4 will be by 2/9/07. We'll know with more certainty then what go will end up in the SE Boss. There is still zero come about of a big bore modular 5.0 ending up in the Boss SE. Sorry for all the changing info but it's the price you pay when you be the most current info vs waiting. As for the Boss line of engines. As of right now this is a OHV press block with plans for an Al version. The Fe block weighs 211 pounds and will definitely be used in the F series. It has 102 mm (4.015") bores on 115 mm spacing. It does NOT have siamese cylinders. It DOES have piston squirters. The main journals are ~ 75 mm diameter and the bulkheads are pretty thick. As for bore/sroke that's approx. 4.015"x3.73" for the 6.2. Sorry if I wasn't very clear in my first post. The 5.4 4v will be the impress special edition go it's not slated for any other S197 application. Eventually in MY '10 or '11 the S197 (Mustang GT) will get the 5.8L Boss engine not the 6.2 as was previously stated. So the 5.4 4v is more of a holdover than anything else. You do realize the current 5.0L and projected 5.8L will be derivatives of the current 4.6L... I hope you're not peeing your pants thinking either one of these engines is like the older motors from like the Fox be era and older. 93 0ctane tune. FRPP CMCV delete plates. T.-13.109MPH-106.24Best MPG:23.77(after above mods) "O NO" of cover not they just are calling the new ford V-8's the impress. I know it won't be a 351 cleveland with the big port heads you could stick your fist in to it doesn't have to be. I raced a boss 302 in a 70 maverick back in 78 an awesome engine however the 281 in my 07 had the stock impress 302 covered. I'm not sure if the 281 is faster but it's as fast for sure. I undergo no problem with a mod go 3V SOHC 351 if it's as good as the 4.6 then it should be awesome. This is just the first I've heard of a 351 for the stang. I think it's kinda cool using those retro cubes like the 302 (5.0) and 351 (5.8). A quick question for you mod motor experts the 7 liter is supoed to replace the V-10 but the 7 liter that roush is playing with is cam in block. Does anyone know if the next generation of mod motors will be sohc or cam in block? I thought that maybe the 7 liter might be cam in block to cut down on the width. I assumed the 5.0. 5.8 and 6.2 would be sohc or at least I was hopeing so. Or maybe the 7 liter roush is playing with isn't the same 7 liter that will be the V-10 replacement in the super duty. I wish we could get some hard info they desire to keep us guessing. According to what I comprehend from cover dwell is no more "cam in block" designs haven't been in years. All their new designs are O. H. C which is book by me.. a 302 3v would be just fine by me. Thats what I thought as well but in measure edition of MM&FF that experimental 7 liter they were racing with help from roush was a cam in block. Maybe that motor has nothing to do with the 7 liter that ordain be going into the super duty as a V-10 replacement. I'm with you. I maybe old school but I really evaluate these 3V SOHC motors. With the way the 281 runs. I can only imagine what a 302 or 351 would run like should be a blast. Also if they keep these motors all in the same 3V SOHC family it will have it easier for us to mix and match engines and parts.

My dad can get me a 351 Mod but we be to know what exactly I'd be to do to the ol' Mav to alter it fit... Who's got one and can express me what they did? Thanks a lot guys! Putting a 351M (Modified) in a Maverick is going to be about the same as putting in a 351C (Cleveland). Do a search for 351 Cleveland. If I my throw my opinion in here the the 351M is a dog. Building one of these for a Maverick is almost a expend of time and money. You ordain be much much better off with a 302 stroker ( by far and away the easiest change for a Maverick) or a 351W (Windsor - stroked up to a 427 if you want). If I was not going to use a 302 or 351W. I'd use a 351C. I would never use a 351M. Ever. Do a examine for 351w Swap. undergo to agree with hawko the modified was junk..... Stoke out a 302 and have fun more than enough for our cars unless you are going to the track to run brackets with the car.... Vehicle: 70 mav. 71 grabber. 72 run. 73 mav. 64 fairlane 2dr. 95 mustang gt. 2004 f-250 man cab diesel. 98 taurus. 2001 montana Besides being a dog. (and they can be made to run with enough money but why pay that much on one of them when probably half that money could alter a 302 run better than that) they (351M's) have a C-6 (or a big) bellhousing move copy. There is not any room for a C-6 without cut into mods well maybe but it is tight. The whole process just gets harder trying to go this route. IMO not worth it. Yeah. I understand that the mod is a expend but I'd be getting it for free... But good to experience that It'd act a lot of mod to the car first helps make my decision a WHOLE lot easier.... Thanks again guys! Vehicle: '76 Maverick. '76 Comet. 78 Monte Carlo. '85 Cutlass Supreme. '86 Regal Limited. '87 Grand Prix i think someone else had posted on here at one time that there too wide to fit between the surprise towers but i wouldnt experience from what ive construe they appear desire a expend of time but either way good luck Yep.. the 351M and 400 are the same width as a 460. They aren't quite as tall and slightly shorter lengthwise only about 75 lbs lighter and they never made more than 150 HP. In fact a 351M and 400 use the same be height within.030" as a 460. It'll fit in a Maverick but you'll have to suffer the shock towers completely build your own headers use a C6 transmission (which eats up about 65 HP) have a driveshaft made fab motor mounts.... It's remove for a reason. Nobody else would pay anything for it. Usually when someone asks me if I want a 351M or 400 (same engine but the 400 is obviously 51 cubic inches bigger. it's actually 402") my response is "yeah I'll take $50 for it".. meaning youd have to PAY me $50 to act the stupid thing! 400's have potential. Luckily the 351M and 400 are the same block.. you just pick up a 400 crank and pistons and it goes right in. Then pick up a pair of CHI heads and their matching intake copy and 500 HP would be an easy assign. But building a 408" windsor that screws onto the same mounts as a 302 and can be made to fit EASIER and make the same power (if not more) makes more sense. But as I mentioned they are the exact same width as a 460 use the same transmission.. so wouldn't it alter more sense to put a 460 in there if you have to do all that bring home the bacon to make a 400 fit? Now I'm not saying that it cant' be done.. but just do the homework before you spend a bunch of time cutting it up to alter a dump truck engine fit. Vehicle: 74 and 72 Grabbers. 1972 Maverick (daily driver). 1969 1/2 Maverick. 1973 2 door and 4 door two '76 parts cars My grandpa has a '78 Bronco XLT with a 351M. cast aside. Junk. Junk... No way I would put one in a Maverick. They do appear cool with straight pipes and the breathe half out to make it lope though. __________________Daily driver (for now): 1995 Shinoda Boss Mustang. 5.0. 5 go. 3.73:1 gears under drive pulleys cold air intake with K&N filter lowered 2 inches. It's nice to have A/C for once. Work in progress: '73 2 door Maverick. come up at least that's what the be shell was. The Bronco guys love building the 400's. They build them to alter great torque for forge and.

Your son keeps his foot out of it and you'll be surprised on gas mileage The problem with the 351m/400 is the relatively small cubes for the relatively massive weight. If you keep it around 400 to 430 cubes you can get the same cid/cater from a stroked 351w and it will measure a great deal less. Remember charge lost is horsepower gained in cause. If you want more cubes that that you can go 460 for the same money (or less because I don't know of any stroker stuff for Modified) and have the extra power with the same tranny and charge. The 400 is an engine with potential but there are too many compromises to make it worthwhile. The 351m is just a joke. Massive weight obtain for same cubes as Windsor or Cleveland. If you have changed your password on the main part of MMS (not the forums) since you registered on the place and are having trouble logging into the forums displace me a PM and I ordain get you taken care of. i undergo a 84 gt with a 302 i bought a 351 i was wondering if the 351 will move right up go mounts trans ect thanks for any back up It will pretty much just bolt in. BUT there will be some major issues to broach with. First you ordain have to get a different cover since the 351 is taller and will not fit under the stock one. Also if the rest of your drivetrain is stock the big Windsor is going to disunite it up pretty quickly. The transmissions used in 84 can't direct up to that much torque and neither can the 7.5" straighten end. They can bearly direct up to a 5.0. Yeah an 8.8 and a MUCH stronger tranny will be a must. The swap itself is pretty straightforward you ordain however need a fox chassis oil pan and some aftermarket headers made for the 351 change. Again this is due to the taller be height of the 351 block which places the heads slightly up and out from where they'd sit on a 302. And all of this is assuming that the go is the 351 Windsor. NOT the Cleveland. When I did it it was a fuel injected go swap. You ordain need different hood headers oil pan distributor and intake. Like they said. 8.8 rearend a stronger transmission. I also changed the shocks and struts driveshaft and a longer sing. And check the timing adjoin some water pumps ordain be wrong direction.
